Talking about India and organ donation, it is estimated that around half a million people in the country die every year, waiting for organs. Breaking it down further, 1 lakh people die in the country because of liver diseases while just 1,000 get a liver transplant. More than 2 lakh patients await kidneys whereas just 15,000 people get kidney transplant. In this context, if we speak about the North Eastern region, we do not really have a count of people who die due to lack of organs, as someone undergoing that stage where he/she requires transplantation to be done (apart from Kidney and a part of liver) is mostly referred to other parts of India as deceased donation has not yet started in this region.

Till date, not even a single Deceased Donation has taken place in all the eight states of North Eastern region. Until and unless people know what Deceased Donation is, what are its benefits and why they should come forward for the cause; this concept will never see light of day. Therefore, generating awareness on deceased organ donation and its importance is very important. ORGANOTHON was founded with this very motive. It is one of the medium to raise mass awareness by seeking people’s participation and support towards the cause.
